A meeting organised by the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) was held today in Milan with the aim of promoting dialogue between the National Federations and the UCI.
The meeting, organised by the UEC, convened in full compliance with its statutes and coordinated by FCI Secretary General Marcello Tolu, was attended by UEC President, UCI Vice-President and UCI CCP member Enrico Della Casa, the President of the Italian Cycling Federation and member of the UCI CCP Cordiano Dagnoni, UCI representatives for the Road sector Matthew Knight, Sports Strategy Manager and Maxime Métry (Road Department), for the FCI Giorgio Elli (Secretary Road Sector) and Luca Papini, Secretary General of the Professional Cycling League.
The choice of Milan as the venue confirms the central role of Italy, one of the founding countries of the UCI and one of the most active countries in the world in the organisation and development of Road cycling. The FCI, a historic pillar of the UCI, continues to be a benchmark in supporting international activities and coordinating calendars.
Work focused on the 2027 and 2028 Road calendars, two seasons marked by major global events: in 2027, the World Cycling Championships will take place, bringing together all disciplines between the end of August and the beginning of September; in 2028, the Olympic Games from mid-July will require careful planning of international activities.
This combination will require meticulous coordination to ensure balance and sustainability throughout the season.
Enrico Della Casa, President of the Union Européene de Cyclisme: "We wanted to hold this meeting in Italy, one of the founding countries of the UCI and a long-standing leader in Road cycling.
The FCI is a pillar of the UCI and a key partner. We are working together to address and overcome the challenges of an increasingly busy calendar: there is much to be done, but this is an important first step in laying solid, common foundations, listening carefully to the needs of organisers."
Cordiano Dagnoni, President of the Italian Cycling Federation: "It is clear that international cycling calendars have become increasingly intense. This does not encourage participation, penalising countries with fewer resources in particular and thus running counter to the intention of international bodies to increase the popularity and practice of cycling.
I would like to thank the UEC and its President, Enrico Della Casa, for organising a meeting to discuss these issues here in Italy, recognising the important role of the FCI within the UCI, international cycling and in relations with the federations of emerging countries”.
