Germany has once again dominated the Juniors and Under 23 Track European Championships which finished yesterday at the Attilio Pavesi Velodrome in Fiorenzuola d’Arda (Italy).
The German riders came at the top of the medals table winning 30 medals: 12 gold (out of 44 medals on offer), 9 silver and 9 bronze, ahead of Russia (11, 3 and 7) and the host country, Italy (5, 4, and 4).
The star of the show of this edition of the European Championships was without doubt Lea Sophie Friederich; the German Under 23 sprinter who won the gold medal in all the races she competed in: Sprint, Team Sprint (with Propster and Grabosch), 500 Metres and Keirin.
In the Women’s endurance races, the Under 23 Italian national team gave a good performance winning 5 gold medals in the Elimination (Chiara Consonni), Madison (Chiara Consonni and Martina Fidanza), Points Race (Silvia Zanardi), Team Pursuit (Marta Cavalli, Chiara Consonni, Martina Fidanza and Vittoria Guazzini) and Scratch (Martina Fidanza).
In the Men’s events, as well as the results obtained by the German Under 23s in the Km and Individual Pursuit with Felix Gross, in Keirin with Anton Hohne, and by the Juniors Willi Weinrich (Sprint), Benjamin Boos (Individual Pursuit), Mortiz Kretschy (Points Race), and the Team Sprint, a remarkable performance was given by Ivan Smirnov and Lev Gonov in the Under 23 Madison. The two Russian riders achieved a clear win finishing two laps in front of their opponents and earning points in nearly all the sprints raced.
