#EUROMTB22 - SWITZERLAND TOP OF EUROPE

The first stage of the 2022 Juniors and Under 23 European Championships, has finished today.

The continental event, that will end on 19 July, started with the MTB Championships and awarded a total of eleven titles.

Switzerland came top of the final medals table with three gold medals, three silver and three bronze in front of Italy (2,2 and 1) and the Netherlands (2 gold and 2 silver).

Titles in Short Track were awarded for the first time at the Anadia European Championships. They were won by Simona Spesná (Czech Republic) and Yanick Binz (Switzerland) in the Juniors, and Ronja Blöchlinger (Switzerland) and Charlie Aldridge (Great Britain) in the higher category.

The Italian Gaia Tormena confirmed her position as the best specialist in the Eliminator winning her fourth European title, meanwhile in the Men’s the gold medal was won by the Slovenian rider Jacob Klemencic who, in the thrilling final, in the sprint, beat the Portuguese Ricardo Marinheiro and the Romanian Ede Karoly Molnar.

The Team Relay race was dominated by the Dutch national team with Tom Schellekens, Rens Manen, Fem Empel, Lauren Molengraaf, Puck Pieterse, David Haverdings, beating Italy and Germany.

In the Cross-Country, the Juniors titles were won by two of the greatest talents on the international circuit. In the Women’s, the Swiss Monique Halter crossed the line alone, 53" in front of her compatriot Lea Huber and 1'14" ahead of Natalia Grzegorzewska (Poland). The Men’s race was very entertaining with an exciting duel between the Dutch rider Rens Manen and the Dane Gustav Pedersen who immediately took charge of the race. In the final stages Pedersen managed to push ahead with a solo sprint to the finish, silver medal went to Manen and bronze to the German Paul Schehl.

The programme finished on Sunday with the Under 23 Cross-Country races won by Simone Avondetto (Italy) and Puck Pieterse (Netherlands) who achieved her first MTB title, after having won two Cyclo-Cross European Championships in her career.

The Juniors and Under 23 European Championships will continue with the Road races (7-10 July) and end with the Track races (14-19 July).
